A board powering on is important, but it is not a complete definition of PCB assembly quality. Incorrect parts, reversed polarity or weak solder joints can create failures that are not obvious during a basic power-up check.
Quality begins before assembly
BOM, Gerber and Pick & Place revisions should be aligned. Material MPN, package and polarity requirements should also be verified before production.
Inspection methods serve different purposes
Visual inspection can identify missing or misoriented parts and obvious solder defects. AOI can support repeatable optical checks on suitable assemblies. Electrical and functional testing address different questions and should be defined according to the product.
About IPC-A-610
IPC-A-610 is a widely referenced industry document for the acceptability of electronic assemblies. Referring to the standard is not the same as claiming a specific company or personnel certification; project requirements should always be stated explicitly.
Share special test, reporting or traceability requirements when requesting PCB assembly, so the required quality scope can be evaluated before production.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AOI required for every PCB assembly?+
No. AOI should be evaluated according to component density, process, volume and quality requirements.
Does functional testing replace visual inspection?+
No. They evaluate different aspects of the assembly and can complement each other.
Is referencing IPC-A-610 the same as being certified?+
No. The standard can be used as a reference without implying any specific company or personnel certification.
