What Is Electronic PCB Assembly? Understanding SMD/SMT and THT

A practical guide to electronic PCB assembly, SMD/SMT and THT processes, technical files, component supply and quotation preparation.

Turning an electronic design into a working board requires more than producing a bare PCB. Resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits, connectors and other components must be placed in the correct positions and soldered with a process suitable for the board. This stage is generally called electronic PCB assembly or PCBA.

What happens during PCB assembly?

The objective is to place and electrically connect the specified components according to the design data. A project may include material verification, board preparation, component placement, soldering, visual inspection and, when defined in the scope, testing.

SMD and SMT

SMD means Surface Mount Device, while SMT means Surface Mount Technology. SMD components are soldered directly to pads on the PCB surface. A common SMT flow includes solder-paste application, component placement using Pick & Place data, reflow soldering and inspection.

THT and mixed assembly

Through-Hole Technology uses components whose leads pass through PCB holes before soldering. Connectors, relays and terminal blocks may use this method. Many modern boards combine SMD and THT parts, so manufacturing is planned as a mixed assembly.

Which files are useful?

  • BOM with part numbers and quantities
  • Gerber manufacturing data
  • Pick & Place coordinates
  • Assembly drawings and project notes

If you are unsure about the assembly method, the technical package can be evaluated during quotation. See SEMKO’s electronic PCB assembly service.

Why component supply matters

A critical missing item can delay the whole board. Component sourcing should be considered together with the assembly plan. SEMKO can evaluate electronic component supply based on part numbers and project conditions.

Inspection and quotation preparation

Inspection may look for missing or incorrectly oriented components, solder bridges and other visible issues. Functional testing, when required, should be separately defined with its test method and acceptance criteria.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PCB assembly the same as PCB manufacturing?+

No. PCB manufacturing creates the bare printed circuit board; PCB assembly mounts electronic components onto that board.

Are SMD and SMT the same term?+

SMD refers to the surface-mount component, while SMT refers to the technology used to mount it.

Is a BOM enough for a quotation?+

A BOM is a key document, but Gerber, Pick & Place, assembly drawings, quantity and project notes may also be required.

Can SMD and THT components be used on the same board?+

Yes. Many boards combine both technologies and are planned as mixed assembly projects.
